Pearson is an English patronymic surname, first used to mark someone out as the son of a particular father. The name joins the given name Piers to the ending -son. Piers belongs to a wider family of related personal names, among them Pears, Pierre, Per, Pere and Peter, and a son of any of them could end up a Pearson. Pierson and Peirson are other spellings of the same name.
