Where the Powell name comes from
Powell carries a father's name inside it, from the Welsh ap Hywel, meaning son of Hywel. Hywel was later Anglicized as Howell, and the ap at the front wore down into the single P that opens the modern spelling. The older written form Powel survives, and Howell and Huell are close relatives of the same name. Some have tied Powell to Paul instead, but that connection is folk etymology.
The name goes back to a dynasty of kings who ruled in Wales and Brittany during the 9th and 10th centuries, and to three Welsh royal houses from that period onwards. The House of Tudor, one of the royal houses of England, descended from them.
