Where the Richardson name comes from
Richardson is son of Richard, and Richard is built from two Germanic words, ric, power, and hard, brave or hardy. The name is most at home in the north east of England, and both Richard and Richardson turn up in Yorkshire records as early as 1381. The Swedish spelling Richardsson keeps the same two pieces and doubles the s. Dickson and Dixon belong to the same family of names.
