Where the Rivera name comes from
Rivera is the old spelling of ribera, the Spanish word for a riverbank, so the name says where a family lived. The word is inherited from the Early Medieval Latin riparia, which is also the parent of the Catalan ribera and the Portuguese ribeira. The surname turns up as Spanish, Portuguese, Galician and Italian, which is a wide spread for one riverbank. There is a Rivera in Switzerland too, a small town in the Ticino, carrying the same word into a fourth language.
