Where the Rogers name comes from
Rogers is son of Roger, a given name the Normans brought over and one that most genealogists trace to the older English Hrothgar, from hroth, fame, and gari, a spear. The first place anybody wrote that name down is Beowulf. Roger itself turns up in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Rogerus, and the surname first appears in the mid 13th century, with Richard Roger recorded in Kent in 1263 and William Rogger in the Sussex tax rolls of 1296. It ranks 77th in England and Wales, and many Irish Rogerses are really Mac Ruaidhri under an English spelling.
