Where the Russell name comes from
Russell is a surname of Anglo-Norman origin, written in early records as Rosel, Rousel, Roussel, Russel or Rossell. Two distinct origins have been proposed for it, and which of them is right has long been disputed. Early genealogists traced the Russell family of Kingston Russel to Anglo-Norman landholders bearing the toponymic name de Rosel or du Rozel, from Rosel in Calvados, Normandy.
J. Horace Round found those pedigrees flawed, showing they had linked such landholders with unrelated men who instead bore the Anglo-Norman nickname rus[s]el, recorded in Latin as Rosellus and given to men with red hair. That nickname was a diminutive of the Norman-French rus, from Old French ros and modern French roux, meaning red, and it doubled as an archaic word for the red fox, borrowed in turn from Old Norse rossel, "red-haired". Surname dictionaries have sided with Round and derive Russell from the nickname rather than from the place. It passed down as an English, Scottish and Irish surname and later became a male given name, shortened to Russ.
