Where the Schultz name comes from
Schultz is a German and Dutch surname that grew out of Schultheiß, the medieval word for a village headman or constable. The office was close to that of a mayor today. Schultz is an occupational surname derived from Schultheiß, a mayor in medieval Germany. In German, Schultz is a less common spelling of Schulz.
Related forms include Schulte, Schulten, Schultheis, Schultze and Schulze. In Silesia the "u" was often replaced by an "o", which gave Scholz and Scholtz. Other languages adapted the spelling as Shultz, Šulc and Szulc. In the 2010 United States Census, Schultz ranked as the 297th most common surname, carried by 104,888 people.
