Where the Scott name comes from
Scott comes from the Latin Scoti, the word the Romans used for the Gaels, and as a surname it is Scottish. It first appears in the 12th century along the Anglo-Scottish border, and the earliest bearer on record is Uchtredus filius Scoti, named in the charter that founded Holyrood Abbey and Selkirk in 1120. Clan Scott was one of the most formidable of the riding clans of the borders, and the name is now among the twelve most common in Scotland. It reached Kent by the 14th century and was first recorded in Ireland in the 17th.
