Where the Singh name comes from
Singh comes from the Sanskrit word simha, meaning "lion", and carried the sense of a hero or an eminent person. Kshatriya warriors in northern India first used the word as a title, and the earliest recorded names ending in Simha belong to the two sons of Rudraraman, who ruled the Western Satraps in the second century CE. Jayasimha, the first Chalukya ruler to bear the title, reigned around 500 CE. Among the Rajputs, Singh replaced the older epithet Varman, taking hold with the Paramaras of Malwa in the 10th century and with the Guhilots and the Kachwahas of Narwar in the 12th. Related forms include Singa, the Indonesian word for lion, and Thiha in Burmese, taken from the Pali siha.
In 1699 Guru Gobind Singh, born Gobind Das, directed all Sikh men to take the name, in part as a rejection of caste prejudice. Its female equivalent is Kaur. In the 2010 United States Census, Singh ranked 260th among surnames, carried by 116,749 people.
