Where the Soto name comes from

Soto is a Spanish surname. The Spanish word behind it was inherited from Latin saltus, passed down through the language rather than borrowed into it. The name travelled with Spanish to the Philippines, where Cebuano, Kapampangan and Tagalog carry it as Sotto. In Serbo-Croatian, Soto is a given name in its own right.
