Where the Stanley name comes from
Stanley began as an English place name, built from the Old English words stān, meaning stone, and lēah, meaning meadow. It is a habitational surname, first carried by people from one of several English places called Stanley, among them villages in Derbyshire, Staffordshire, West Yorkshire and Wiltshire. The same pairing survives in modern English as stone plus -ley, the old word for a lea. The name rose into the English nobility: Thomas Stanley, who lived from 1435 to 1504, became the 1st Earl of Derby. The coastal town of Stanley in Hong Kong is named after a later holder of that title, Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby.
Stanley later passed from surname to given name and was popular in the early 20th century. As a given name it has also served as an English form of Stanisław and Stanislav.
