Where the Stewart name comes from
Stewart is the steward, from the Old English stigweard, which joins stig, a household, to weard, a guardian, and the Gaelic Stiubhart says the same thing. The family it belongs to descends from Alan fitz Flaad, a Breton knight who settled in England after the Norman Conquest. His son Walter fitz Alan moved to Scotland during the Anarchy and became High Steward of Scotland, and that office is where the surname comes from. Stuart, Steward and Steuart are the same name spelled differently, and Stewart ranked 66th in the United Kingdom in 2014.
