Where the Vega name comes from
Vega is a Spanish surname meaning "dweller in the meadow" or "one who lives on the plain." It comes from the Spanish word vega, a meadow or fertile lowland. That word traces back through Old Spanish vayca to an Old Basque form, bai-ko, meaning a river plain or water meadow. The surname also turns up as Vegas and Vegaz.
The name sometimes refers instead to the Virgin of the Meadow, a title of the Virgin Mary. It is also sometimes given in reference to a star in the constellation Lyra. That star's name has a separate origin in Arabic, from an-nasr al-waqi, "the falling eagle."
