Where the Walker name comes from
Walker has little to do with walking. It comes from the Old English wealcere and the verb to walk in its older sense of to full or to waulk cloth, so a walker trod woollen cloth in water to thicken it. The same word is walker in Middle High German, from walkari and the verb walken, to full wool. It is English and Scottish, the 14th most common surname in England with over 150,000 bearers in 2014, the 14th in Australia and the 28th in the United States.
