Where the Walsh name comes from
Walsh comes from Walsch, the Middle English word for a Welshman, which grew out of Old English wælisċ. The name first marked a Welsh speaker, and many of them reached Ireland after the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century. In Irish the name became Breathnach, which was later anglicised as Brannagh.
One theory traces the Kilkenny family known as Walsh of the Mountains to Walynus, who came to Ireland in the military retinue of Maurice FitzGerald, Lord of Lanstephan. The Walsh family of Castlehale in County Kilkenny carried a crest of a swan pierced by an arrow, with the motto "Pierced but not dead". Walsh is now the fourth most common surname in Ireland, and other spellings include Walshe, Welch and Welsh.
