Where the Wang name comes from
Wang is the pinyin romanization of the Chinese surname 王, the Chinese word for "king". It is currently the most common surname in Mainland China. It is the 8th name listed in the Hundred Family Surnames. The modern surname has four principal origins, among them Zi, Ji and Gui. A separate Chinese surname, 汪, is also romanized as Wang.
As a Korean surname, Wang comes from 왕, which in turn comes from the Chinese. As a German and Dutch surname, Wang comes from wang, meaning "cheek", and from obsolete derivatives of Proto-Germanic *wangaz, meaning "field, meadow". In Danish and Norwegian use, Wang is a spelling variant of Vang.
