Where the Watson name comes from
Watson is son of Wat, and Wat was the medieval short form of Walter. Walter is Germanic, built from wald, power or rule, and hari, an army, and the first man on record with it is Walthari son of Wacho, king of the Lombards in the 540s. The same name became Gauthier in French, Gutierre in Spanish, Gualtiero in Italian and Wouter in Dutch.
