Where the Welch name comes from
Welch comes from the Old English word welisc, meaning "foreign". That word traces back through Proto-West Germanic *walhisk to Proto-Germanic *walhiskaz. In Middle English it appeared as Welich, a variant of Walsch.
The first recorded use as a name came from the Old Norman French "le waleis", meaning "the Welshman". It began as a nickname for William de la Haye, a Cambro-Norman nobleman who witnessed a donation to the monastery of Monmouth in 1140. Welch shares this root with Walsh, and the spelling Welsh is the most common form in Scotland. In Ireland, where the Anglo-Norman invasion carried the name, Walsh predominates. The old spelling survives in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, a British regiment whose name was confirmed by Army order.
