Where the West name comes from

West is an English surname made by turning the ordinary word for the compass direction into a name. In Middle English it marked a newcomer arriving from the west, or someone who lived to the west of a village. The word behind it is old Germanic stock, with close counterparts in Danish, Dutch and West Frisian.

West is also a Finnish surname, an Americanized form of Vesterinen.
