Where the Williamson name comes from
Williamson began as a patronymic, built from the given name William and the ending -son. It took hold as both a Scottish and an English surname. In Ireland, Williamson is also a patronymic, adopted as an anglicized form of Mac Uilliam, or McWilliam.
