Where the Wong name comes from

Wong is the Cantonese spelling of more than one Chinese surname, and the two most common are 黃 and 王. The name 黃 means yellow, and it shares an origin with the spellings Huang and Huynh. The name 王 means king, and its relatives include Wang and Vuong. In Cantonese the two sound exactly alike, so speakers tell them apart by description: 黃 is the Wong of the Yellow River, and 王 is the three-stroke Wong, named for its three horizontal lines.

The romanised form traces back to Bianjing, modern Kaifeng, under the Song dynasty, and some records take the surname itself back to the Han dynasty of 206 BC to 220 AD. Migrants carried it to south-east Asia, Europe, Canada, Australia and the United States. By 2010 it was the 274th most common surname in the United States, carried by 111,371 people. Separately, Wong is also a rare English surname from the Old English geong, meaning young.
