Where the Wood name comes from
Wood is where the family lived. It is the Middle English wode and the Old English wudu, and it described somebody who lived in or worked in a wood or a forest. The earliest example on record is de la Wode, in Hertfordshire in 1242, and clerks writing in Latin turned the same name into de Bosco, after the Old French word for a wood. There is a second and much rarer Wood from the Old English wod, meaning frenzied or wild, given as a nickname to an eccentric or a violent man, and le Wode is on record in Worcestershire as early as 1221.
