Where the Woods name comes from

Woods began as a topographic surname in Middle English, a variant of Wood given to someone who lived by a wood or in one. It may also be patronymic in some lines, marking a family as the sons of a man known as Wood. The name is common and belongs to English, Scottish and Irish stock alike. Its plural form, Woodses, is still in use for families who carry it.
