Where the Wright name comes from
A wright shaped wood. The word is the Old English wryhta, in use by about 700, and it later widened to mean a skilled worker of any kind, which is how it ended up as a surname in England and Scotland. It survives in the compounds: shipwright, wheelwright, wainwright, playwright. Carpentier came over after 1066 and gradually took the job over in most of England, though Scottish English kept wright in its original sense, and the Glasgow and Edinburgh incorporations of wrights still use it that way. It was the eleventh most common surname in England in 2014, and it also stands in for the Gaelic Mac an t-Saoir, son of the wright, which English otherwise renders MacIntyre.
