Where the Yang name comes from

Yang is a Chinese family name written 楊 in traditional characters and 杨 in simplified, and the character means willow. The clan traces back to Boqiao, a son of Duke Wu of Jin, who belonged to the Ji (姬) lineage, the royal family of the Zhou dynasty. Boqiao received the state of Yang as a fief in the Spring and Autumn period, and the clan he founded carries its name. Yang is the 16th surname in the Hundred Family Surnames text and the sixth most common surname in mainland China.

Korean Yang families trace their name to two different characters, 梁 and 楊. The Yang clan of Jeju descends from Yang Eulna (梁乙那), whose line one account traces to three men who rose from a cave on the north side of Halla Mountain. In South Korea, the 2000 census counted 486,645 people named Yang. In the United States, the 2010 census placed Yang as the 290th most common surname, held by 106,033 people.
