Where the word cobweb comes from
A cob was a spider. Old English had attercoppe, the poison head, which wore down to coppe and then cob, so cobweb is simply spider web with the old word for spider fossilised inside it.
The spider's name fell out of English entirely and survives only here, holding up the first half of a compound.
