Where the word grateful comes from
Grateful was built in the fifteen hundreds from the now-vanished English word grate, meaning agreeable, itself from the Latin gratus, pleasing. The rest of that family died out and grateful stayed.
It is the daily-practice version of thanks, which is why kitchens and dining rooms claim it.
