Where the word legacy comes from

Legacy comes through Old French from the Latin legare, to bequeath, which is itself from lex, law. The first legacy in English was the office of an envoy rather than anything anyone inherited.

The modern sense is what a person leaves behind, which makes it a family word rather than a legal one.
