Where the word turkey comes from
Turkey is a case of mistaken identity that stuck. Guinea fowl reached England through Turkish merchants and were called turkey cocks, and when the American bird arrived it was confused with them and kept the name.
The bird has never been near the country it is named for, and by now the word means the dinner more than the animal.
