Where the word whole comes from
Whole is the Old English hal, meaning healthy and uninjured, and heal, hale and hallow all come from it. The w was added by fifteenth century spellers and has never been pronounced.
Being whole meant being unhurt long before it meant being complete, and both readings suit a quiet corner.
