Where the word yay comes from
Yay is younger than it looks. It is a twentieth century spelling invented to keep the cheer apart from yea, the old word for a vote in favour, which was being read the wrong way.
A word that exists because of a spelling problem has ended up carrying most of the small celebrations in English.
