Where the word lantern comes from
Lantern runs back through Old French to the Latin lanterna and the Greek lampter, a torch, from lampein, to shine. Jack of the lantern first meant a night watchman, then the marsh light that leads travellers astray, and only later the carved pumpkin.
Three different lights have worn this name, and the pumpkin got it last.
