Where the word scary comes from
Scare comes from the Old Norse skirra, to frighten, brought over by Norse speakers. Scary itself is a latecomer, mostly nineteenth century, and it took a while for English to accept it as respectable.
The Vikings supplied the fright and the Victorians supplied the adjective.
