Where the word trick comes from
Trick came from Old North French trique, from a verb meaning to deceive. Trick or treat is far younger and North American, printed in the nineteen twenties and thirties, when the custom settled into the form it still has.
The word is medieval and the doorstep bargain is not yet a hundred years old.
